33 bicycle riders killed in crashes

The Road Safety Unit in the Ministry of Transport and Mining has intensified its call for motorists to look out for road users, especially pedal cyclists.

The call comes against a background where 32 pedal cyclists have died in traffic crashes since the start of the year. This is an increase of 33 per cent when compared to 2015 which recorded a total of 24 such deaths.

A total of 365 fatalities have occurred on the roads since the start of the year. The most recent fatality occurred on Thursday, December 8 when an 86 year old man died from injuries when he was hit by a truck travelling along Marcus Garvey Drive.

In addition, a 14 year old male died from traffic related injuries while he was on Brunswick Avenue, Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

Director of the Road Safety Unit, Kenute Hare says safety in the road environment should be practised by all since traffic related deaths are not confined to any one category of road users.

“We recognise that some persons behave as if traffic accidents cannot happen to them; history has shown that this is a very false notion and so everyone without exception, needs to take the requisites steps to ensure their safety as well as that of others as they navigate the traffic environment.”
